The curriculum in British Columbia has undergone some revision and redesign. In this “concept-based competency-driven approach to learning,” (https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/rethinking-curriculum) the focus is on content (what students KNOW), curriculum competencies (what students can DO), and the key concepts (what students UNDERSTAND). As well, there is a greater emphasis on learning abilities and skills (called “Core Competencies”) and the First Peoples Principles of Learning.
This school year, students up to grade nine may be learning part or all of the redesigned curriculum. This curriculum becomes official starting in September 2016.
The curriculum for grades 10, 11, and 12 is still in draft form and feedback is still being received. Next school year, teachers may implement part of all of the redesigned curriculum. This curriculum becomes official in September 2017.
